Automotive Tip of the Month- July

Filed under: Automotive Tip of the Month

Going travelling this summer?

~Check your tires to make sure they can withstand heavy loads and high temperatures. Make sure you have the correct tire pressure in all tires including the spare. The recommendations are listed on the side of the driver’s door. Check that your tires aren’t overly worn. If so, you should replace them.

~Have your radiator inspected and tested. Use antifreeze in your radiator, even in the summer. It contains corrosion inhibitors that will help reduce rusting.

~Don’t forget to change the oil. This is especially important in the summer because hot weather requires extra lubrication for the engine. If you will be pulling a trailer, use “severe duty” oil.

Summer Fun The Natural Way to Stay in Balance

Summer is finally here and it’s time to enjoy warmth, fun and all of the sun and water we’ve been hoping for.

Summer can also be a time when we sometimes overdo it in our excitement to make the most of this short season. One thing I can never stress is GET ENOUGH WATER! Drink plenty, with a goal of getting 1oz. for every 2lbs of body weight every day and add at least another 16oz if it’s warm enough to make you perspire. It sounds like a lot, but there is plenty of evidence to support this. That old 8 glasses / day is just that… old. Also if you feel you are really thirsty and have been sweating a lot and suspect you are dehydrated, drink warm, not cold water. To efficiently absorb the water your body must warm the water to body temperature. Cold is refreshing but warm rehydrates faster. Stay away from sport drinks unless you are sweating (beading or dripping) or having been sweating for awhile. Most are very high in sodium and sugar and you likely don’t need the amounts they contain.

Try to eat more summer foods, such as cherries, pine apple, celery, water melon, cucumbers, artichokes, watercress to improve urination and help body with water retention. Hot weather increases sweating and reduces urination which might also lead to water retention and sometimes to a puffy face or feet and legs.

Along with heat, summer often brings bumps, bruises and sprains from all of the play. If hurt, ice the injury as soon as possible, as its effects diminish after 48hrs. Elevate and move the ice pack around “ice massage”. Ice for no more than 15-20min. and give a 45min. break to warm up. You can ice as frequently as you wish, so long as the area is warm to touch and has normal sensation before repeating.  Frost bite in summer? Yes. Do not allow ice to sit against the skin without a layer of protection. Either move the ice, “ice massage” or use a thin towel between the ice and skin.

Summer is also a great time to kick your exercise up a notch or two with a goal of keeping it there into the fall. In summer we are generally more active with summer fun like swimming, camping, canoeing etc. and often stop our fitness classes. I encourage you to keep up your yoga, dance, or other fitness classes. You’ll be impressed with your progress come fall.

Stay well, stay strong… you deserve it.

Marie Thérèse Forget Casgrain

marie

Marie Thérèse Forget Casgrain. (10 July 1896 – 3 November 1981)

Thérèse Casgrain was a feminist, reformer, politician and senator in Quebec, Canada.

She was raised in a wealthy family, the daughter of Lady Blanche MacDonald and Sir Rodolphe Forget. She married Pierre-François Casgrain, a wealthy Liberal politician with whom she raised four children.

Casgrain led the women’s suffrage movement in Quebec prior to World War I. She founded the Provincial Franchise Committee in 1921 and campaigned for women’s rights and for the right to vote in Quebec elections, a right that was not won until 1940. From 1928 to 1942, she was the leader of the League for Women’s Rights. In the 1930s, she hosted a popular radio show Fémina. In the 1942 federal by-election, she stood as an “Independent Liberal” candidate in the Charlevoix-Saguenay riding, the same seat formerly held both by her father and by her husband.

Following World War II, she left the Liberal Party and joined the social democratic Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF). In 1948, she became one of the federal vice presidents of the CCF. She led the Quebec wing of the party, the Parti social démocratique du Québec, from 1951 to 1957 through three provincial elections using her position as a platform to campaign against the government of Maurice Duplessis. She was therefore the first female leader of a political party in Canada.

In the 1960s, she became a campaigner against nuclear weapons, founding the Quebec wing of Voice of Women. She also was a founder of the League for Human Rights and the Fédération des femmes du Québec. In the 1960s, she was president of the Quebec wing of the New Democratic Party, the CCF’s successor.

In 1967, she was made an Officer of the Order of Canada and in 1974, she was promoted to Companion.
In recognition of her achievements, Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau appointed her to the Canadian Senate in 1970, where she sat as an independent for nine months before reaching the mandatory retirement age of 75.
In 1985, Canada Post honored Thérèse Casgrain with a postage stamp. She also was commemorated in 2004 on the back of the new Canadian $50 bill.

The Best Place On Earth.

There are many fine places to be in the world. Sitting outside on my deck soaking up the afternoon sun and listening to all the wildlife is a very fine place to be. Going for a leisurely afternoon drive in the country and stopping for some ice cream at a roadside country store is another. Looking out over the still waters of the beach on a sunny day could also be my favorite place. Casting out over the side of a boat on a scenic lake could easily be my favorite place too.

The truth is though that my most favorite place to be is lying in my husband’s arms. It is where I feel the most content. A feeling of genuine peace fills my whole being and I know that this is the best place on earth.  It makes me feel protected like absolutely nothing can penetrate his muscular embrace.  When I put my head on his shoulder, I immediately begin to feel all my stresses gently slip away and then he wraps his big strong arms around me and life is good. As I lay there listening to his steady heartbeat, I know without even asking that his heart beats only for me just as mine only beats for him.

He was born weighing only two pounds,  nine ounces and fought hard to survive. I like to think that he lived through those first difficult days because he had to find me and change my life forever. That he did. He introduced me to the simpler way of life. He showed me how to enjoy and appreciate the great outdoors, to sit quietly and listen to the sweet songs of the birds, staring up at the stars on a clear night, to smell the beautiful fragrance of wild roses and the thrill of watching fireflies dancing in the summer night’s air.

We made and raised two fabulous children together who are doing great out on their own. We are fortunate enough to not suffer from the empty nest syndrome because we are a close family and see them regularly. We are very happy for that.

We will be celebrating our 26th wedding anniversary this month and we are still very much in love. He still makes my heart race when he scoops me up in his arms. I still wait in anticipation to see him walk through the door after a hard day’s work. He still gives me goosebumps when I see him from across the room. I still enjoy being chased around the house, trying to avoid another tickling session and we look forward to growing old together.

I can’t wait to find out what the next 26 years will bring but I do know that  I’ll never ever tire of being in the best place on earth, in my husband’s arms of love.

You and me baby, forever and ever.
