Stressed about IBS

ibs

April is awareness month for two interrelated conditions, stress and irritable bowel syndrome or IBS.

Research has proven that both conditions are affected or helped by relieving one or the other.  For many people high or prolonged stress levels often causes symptom of IBS and conversely an IBS flare-up will increase stress levels.

Characteristic symptoms of IBS include any of the following:
·intermittent alternation of constipation and diarrhea which is frequently related to mood changes
·cramping pain in the lower abdomen which may be focused in the left or right  side
·location of pain may vary from site to site and attacks tend to be episodic and may be severe (spastic).
·hypersecretion of colonic mucus (mucus in the stools).
·more frequent bowel movements accompanied by pain.
·sometimes relief of pain with bowel movements.
·pain worse for eating.
·flatulence and distention and nausea
·stools are often small and round and may have the appearance of rabbit droppings or be thin or ribbon like or cigar-shaped.
·varying degrees of anxiety, depression, hostile feelings, fatigue and sleep disturbances which may also worsen the condition.

If you suspect you suffer from IBS, then a diagnosis by an MD is essential. The diagnosis is difficult as it is done by testing for and eliminating other serious conditions as possibilities. This is why these symptoms should not be ignored.

The good news is there are many natural an safe ways to help with IBS. One of the primary focuses is to reduce stress. It is a primary aggravator of IBS and is suspected as a major contributing cause. Two main lifestyle changes proven to help are:
·Diet regimen: high fiber diet, rich in cooked vegetables; avoidance of aggravating foods and any food sensitivities.
·Stress reduction techniques such as meditation, counseling, or yoga.

There are specific yoga poses and also full sequences of postures for relieving and preventing IBS symptoms as well as other digestive problems. Poses can be practiced individually as needed or you can follow the full sequences on a daily basis to maintain digestive stability. Besides the physical aspect of doing specific yoga poses to help IBS, the relaxation and anxiety relief one gets from yoga will not only add to the benefit, but accelerate recovery and resistance to future flare-ups.

Stay well, stay strong… you deserve it.

This is an actual extract from a sex education school textbook for girls, printed in the early 60’s in the UK.

When retiring to the bedroom, prepare yourself for bed as promptly as possible. Whilst feminine hygiene is of the upmost importance, your tired husband does not want to queue for the bathroom, as he would have to do for his train. But remember to look your best when going to bed. Try to achieve a look that is welcoming without being obvious. If you need to apply face-cream or hair-rollers wait until he is asleep as this can be shocking to a man last thing at night.

When it comes to the possibility of intimate relations with your husband, it is important to remember your marriage vows and in particular your commitment to obey him.

If he feels that he needs to sleep immediately then so be it. In all things, be led by your husbands wishes. Do not pressure him in any way to stimulate intimacy. Should your husband suggest congress then agree humbly, all the while being mindful that a mans satisfaction is more important than a woman’s. When he reaches his moment of fulfillment, a small moan from yourself is encouraging to him and quite sufficient to indicate any enjoyment that you may have had.

Should your husband suggest any of the more unusual practices, be obedient and uncomplaining but register any reluctance by remaining silent. It is likely that your husband will then fall promptly asleep so adjust your clothing, freshen up and apply your night-time face and hair care products.

You may then set the alarm so that you can arise shortly before him in the morning. This will enable you to have his morning cup of tea ready when he awakes.

“I must admit that I am a little old fashioned when it comes to my role as a wife but I have to say that this is extreme! If this article doesn’t get your back up, It should make you wonder what else was taught back then in our schools!” Thanks Jessie.

Pecan Chicken Breasts Stuffed With Cream Cheese And Broccoli

Ingredients
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
3/4 cup butter
2 cloves garlic, crushed
1/4 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon chopped pimento
1 cup chopped pecans
1 ½ cups chopped fresh broccoli florets
1 small onion, minced
½ cup sour cream
1 (3 ounce) package cream cheese
8 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves
1 egg, beaten
1 cup dry bread crumbs
½ cup chopped pecans
1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Directions:
To Make Broccoli/Cream Cheese Filling:

In a medium saucepan over low heat, heat the lemon juice, butter or margarine, garlic, basil and pimento until butter or margarine has melted.
Add the 1 cup pecans, broccoli and onion and cook until broccoli is tender; then add the sour cream and cream cheese and mix all together until smooth.
Let cool, cover and refrigerate to chill for 30 minutes.

Place 1 to 2 tablespoons of the broccoli/cream cheese filling in the center of each chicken breast, roll up, tuck in sides and fasten with toothpicks.
Put the egg beat in a shallow dish or bowl and mix the bread crumbs and ½ cup pecans together in another shallow dish or bowl. Dip the chicken rolls in the egg, then in the pecan mixture.

Bake at 350 degrees F for 30 minutes or until chicken is cooked through and chicken meat is white.

Victoria’s Read is 4 Years Old!

I can’t believe it! Another year has gone by and Victoria’s Read is now FOUR YEARS OLD.
A lot has happened in just one year though both personally and professionally.

Professionally, readership has escalated to greater heights. So much so that I had to print more copies. Victoria’s Read started out the year printing just 1500 copies a month. Now, it is at 1800. Thanks to all of you, my ever so wonderful readers.

Creative Impressions has been my choice of a printer company for the better part of the four years. The staff is very accommodating and professional there. Not to mention that the quality of the leaflet is superb.

Victoria’s Read distribution has grown as well. When the leaflet began, it was just in North Bay. Now, I am in eleven towns and continuing. This growth is mostly due to the support of my gracious distributers. Without them, it would not have happened.

My website is a great success too. To date, Victoria’s Read is already up to over 9000 hits. I met a sweet woman by the name of Christina. She showed me the path to the world wide web!

As you probably noticed, there has been some changes made to the leaflet this past year. Some sections were excluded and replaced, all for the better. Your input was greatly accepted and appreciated.

The advertisers are who make Victoria’s Read possible and are greatly appreciated. Many of the businesses have been with me since the beginning and are devoted to promoting what Victoria’s Read is all about…women.

Personally, as my devoted readers would know, I had a gastric bypass. Everything is going great and to date, I have lost 55 pounds!  I do not have any regrets about getting the surgery but it is not something to be entered into lightly and education is very important since it is a life long commitment. If you are thinking of having gastric bypass surgery, I recommend that you go to http://www.urmc.rochester.edu/hh/services-centers/bariatrics for the best and most thorough information on bariatric surgery.

So, I would like to say thank you to all of my readers. Your warm sentiments and words of encouragement mean so much. You give me the confidence to continue.

I would also like to thank my advertisers. You are the backbone of Victoria’s Read. Because of you, women are getting a little piece of the spotlight.

Thank you to all my distributers. You play a valuable part to the success of Victoria’s Read.

Last but not least, I want to thank Creative Impressions for all their patience with me over the past four years.

Female Facts

-Wedding rings are often placed on the third finger of the left hand because ancient Egyptians believed the vein in that hand (which the Romans called the “vein of love”) ran directly to the heart.

-Today, Japan leads the world in condom use. Like cosmetics, they’re sold door to door, by women.

-Kissing each day will keep the dentist away. Kissing encourages saliva to wash food from the teeth and lowers the level of the acid that causes decay, preventing plaque build-up.

Terry Muir- Terry’s Place

Filed under: Business Woman of the Month

Terry Muir

British Columbia born, Terry Muir came to North Bay in 2002 after her husband, Wilson received a job transfer.

After obtaining new employment as a server, Terry quickly learned that she wanted to run her own business and grow professionally. Terry had always enjoyed waitressing but began to not get pleasure from her line of work anymore.  She had done it all of her life and successfully raised two children on her own doing just that. “I admit that I sometimes had three jobs going at once but Wilson came into my life when the kids were young and it all worked out well.”

November 2007, Terry had the opportunity to purchase what was then called Kitty’s Cafe. “I was working there at the time and knew that  I wanted a place where my employees would be happy to come to work.” It’s been three and a half years now since Terry’s Place came into existence. “It was real slow at the start but that all changed. I started out with only four employees and now have nine.”

Terry prides herself on providing good, fast and friendly service along with a positive atmosphere for her patrons and employees alike. “Colin Ricciuto has been with me since the beginning. He started out as a dishwasher then server. Even though he is in an apprenticeship program now, he still works on the weekends because he says that he really likes working here.”

Terry knows that her success is due greatly to her staff and would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank them “They are all so awesome.”

Terry is also a proud supporter of Community Living North Bay. Pierre Brenton began working for Terry on the weekends but now works five days a week. “Everyone is nice to me here.” says Pierre.

Terry’s Place is open 7 days a week from 7am -2pm.
