THE THIRD WEEK IN NOVEMBER IS BLADDER HEALTH WEEK

Bladder Health

Over 3 million individuals live with urologic conditions in Canada alone, affecting their quality of life and their overall life span, conditions like painful kidney stones, urinary tract infections and loss of bladder control.

If you suffer or have suffered from any of the above then a visit to your MD for a checkup is your first stop. In the mean time there are a few things you can do to help yourself.

To help with infection and kidney stone issues, you can start drinking cranberry juice. 100% juice, not the over sugared juice blends. It’s tart, but with a bit of water is drinkable. A specific type of tannin found only in cranberries interacts with the E. coli bacteria (the most common cause of UTI), preventing them from sticking to the walls of the bladder and causing infection. The recommended amount is 4-8oz. daily.

Another self help tool is to strengthen and exercise your pelvic floor. Yes exercise!

Your pelvic floor, its tone and strength are a big factor in bladder control and health. In yoga, the pelvic floor is integral to many poses and breath work and has been for thousands of years. A regular yoga class is a great way to strengthen this area along the rest of your body.

Another exercise you can do regularly are Kegels. To find the muscles for Kegels, you focus by tightening your pelvic floor like you are holding back gas or the urge to urinate.

Then:
~Contract your pelvic floor muscles, hold the contraction for three seconds then relax for three seconds. Repeat 10 times.
~Once you’ve perfected three-second muscle contractions, try it for four seconds at a time, alternating muscle contractions with a four-second rest period.
~Work up to keeping the muscles contracted for 10 seconds at a time, relaxing for 10 seconds between contractions.

To get the maximum benefit, focus on tightening only your pelvic floor muscles. Try not to flex the muscles in your abdomen, thighs or buttocks and try not to hold your breath.

Enjoy life, stay well, stay strong… you deserve it.

The ‘Night of Terror’ - November 15, 1917

This is the story of women who were ground-breakers. These brave women from the early 1900s made all the difference in the lives we live today.

Remember, it was not until 1920 that women were granted the right to vote.

The women were innocent and defenseless, but when, in North America, women picketed in front of the White House, carrying signs asking for the vote, they were jailed and by the end of the first night in jail, those women were barely alive.

Forty prison guards wielding clubs and their warden’s blessing, went on a rampage against the 33 women wrongly convicted of ‘obstructing sidewalk traffic.’

Lucy Burns

Lucy Burns

They beat Lucy Burns, chained her hands to the cell bars above
her head and left her hanging for the night, bleeding and gasping for air

Dora Lewis

Doris Lewis

They hurled Dora Lewis into a dark cell, smashed her
head against an iron bed and knocked her out cold. Her cellmate,
Alice Cosu, thought Lewis was dead and suffered a heart attack.
Additional affidavits describe the guards grabbing, dragging,
beating, choking, slamming, pinching, twisting and kicking the brave women.

Thus unfolded the ‘Night of Terror’ on Nov. 15, 1917,
when the warden at the Occoquan Workhouse in Virginia ordered his guards to teach a lesson to the suffragists imprisoned there because they dared to picket Woodrow Wilson’s White House for the right to vote.

For weeks, the women’s only water came from an open pail. Their food–all of it colorless slop–was infested with worms.

Alice Paul

 Alice Paul

When one of the leaders, Alice Paul, embarked on a hunger strike, they tied her to a
chair, forced a tube down her throat and poured liquid into her until she vomited.
She was tortured like this for weeks until word was smuggled out to the press.

All women who have every voted, have ever owned property, have ever enjoyed equal rights need to remember that  this year, 2009 is the 80th Anniversary of the Persons Case in Canada,
which finally declared women in Canada to be Persons!

Road to Gastric Bypass Surgery

……continued

We did the trip there and back in one day. CRAZY but doable! My father is Super Man. It was not without incident though.

Our GPS system decided that it needed a break or something and conked out on us. “Okay, let’s not panic. I have the Google map instructions somewhere in my paperwork.” I say, as I frantically rummage through my folder of papers.  “Who’s panicking?” my mother asks, as she calmly takes the printed out directions from my quivering hand.

I had forgotten that my parents were seasoned travelers and softly settled back into my seat to yet again enjoy more new scenery since Google maps was taking us a whole new way.  Who knew there were so many ways to get to the same place!

Anyway, I met with my nutritionist. She said the words I was waiting to hear for three months. “Continue doing what you are doing and the doctor’s secretary will be calling you within two weeks with your surgery date.” I kept my composure, thanked her and departed her office with the smile of the Cheshire cat.

Two weeks later, Kristin, my doctors secretary called and informed me that my appointment was for November 18th.

…….To be contined

Shawna Lynn Boller- Roll Me Dough Sweet Shop

Filed under: Business Woman of the Month

002

Shawna Lynn Boller and her family recently moved back home to North Bay from Toronto to pursue her lifelong dreams.

After successfully obtaining a Gourmet Cooking And Catering diploma with Ashworth University, Shawna Lynn opened Roll Me Dough Sweet Shop. “As far back as I can remember, I’ve been in the kitchen, cooking and baking.”

Shawna Lynn’s mother was ill and did not venture outdoors so the two spent many hours in the kitchen, bonding while her mother shared the skills that her mother had taught her. “The recipes I use in my shop are my grandmothers, Elizabeth Watters recipes, which she passed down to my mother then to me.”

Shawna Lynn began her career path by selling her goods at rummage sales and bake sales. “The outcome was overwhelmingly positive and word-of-mouth quickly grew.”

Shawna Lynn’s grandfather has been a huge influence in her life as well. “My grandfather, Bernard (Bunny) Watters owned a restaurant here in North Bay for many years and provided me with the financial direction I required.  He is my inspiration.” Shawna Lynn received a grant from The Northern Ontario Heritage Fund and a loan from Casse Popular.

Roll Me Dough Sweet Shop also sells diabetic goods. “I have many family members in my family who are diabetic so it was only natural to make sugar free goods a big part of my menu.” Besides specializing in diabetic good, Shawna Lynn also offers delivery to anywhere in North Bay. “A pick up service is also available though.”

Shawna Lynn says that she is thankful for her family’s support. “My husband, Mark is very supportive and my three children are so excited for their mommy.”
