Stress and Breathing

med1

One thing is certain; stressors are in each and everyone’s life. The only thing we can change is our attitude towards them and the use of known methods to decrease the effects they have on our lives and health.

Stress can be seen as a motivator; after all it is the stress of the wind in the sails of a sailboat that moves it across the water, allowing us to get from point A to point B. What I would like to suggest, is that we learn to view stress in a similar way to help us to move out of anxiety to peace. It is always wise to discuss any new approaches that you are considering implementing for your health, with your MD, or Naturopathic Dr. Before you begin this exercise, monitor yourself on a scale from 1 to 10. How stressed are you feeling? Make note of it to refer to later on.

1) Sit comfortably with your hands in your lap.
Massage your jaw muscles gently, and place your hands back in your lap.

2) Check your shoulders. Are they tense? Drop them.

3) Now focus on your breathing.
Breathe in the nose and count 1 and 2 and 3 and 4. If four is too long, modify it to your comfort level.

Feel yourself draw the breath in slowly, right in to the upper part of your lungs. The upper chest expands. Then breathe out slowly to the count of 4. Repeat this for a few minutes. Review how you are feeling based on the scale you did at the beginning. Any change? Use this scale each time you do this exercise. Be patient; give yourself time to feel the cumulative effect of daily practice.

Five minutes daily can make a difference, and the effects on the nervous system are highly beneficial when used regularly.

-Always sit a few minutes after doing these breathing exercises before you stand up.

-Always get up slowly. If you have any questions call me at Ohana Wellness Centre, 752-0294.

Grace Hartman

Grace Hartman

Birth: July 14, 1918. Death: December 18, 1993

Grace Hartman was born in 1918 to a Southern Ontario Tory family. Her own mother died when she was a girl, and it was probably her mother-in-law who influenced her commitment to labor most strongly.

Grace started to work as a secretary for North Yorkin 1954. She already had a sense of what unions could do for people, and was ready to help run her local. She became an office less than one year after joining the union. From then on, she was on a straight course: by 1975 she was President of the Canadian Union of Public Employees. CUPE is the largest Canadian union, with 300,000 members in 2000 locals. Grace’s commitment went much farther than the call of duty; she was sent to jail for a month for refusing to order hospital workers in Ontario back to work.

She analyzed the different styles of organization in the labor and peace movement, pointing to ways to bring the two closer together.

Upon retirement from CUPE in 1983, Grace turned her energies and talents to the work of Voice of Women. A long time member, she was Voice of Women President from 1988 until the time she died. Voice of Women is a national women’s peace organization working on issues relating to peace, social justice, development, and the environment.
Grace was committed to the global struggle of women for peace and equality. For example, she helped with the Toronto visit of Irish Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Mairead Corrigan Maguire in 1992 and was a founding member of Women in Global Partnership, an organization dedicated to supporting some of the poorest women in the world. Grace spoke out against the wars in the Gulf, in the former Yugoslavia, and in Somalia. She supported the resistance and reconciliation work of women from these regions.

She was aware of the many dimensions of peace. She recognized the need to affirm the rights of people to hold different views without fear of retaliation. She was an excellent example of why you must hold on to your principles and keep trying to make improvements.

Georgina Lightning- Older Than America

Georgina Lightning

Georgina Lightning is from Hobbema Cree First Nation in Alberta, Canada. She has achieved several aspects of filmmaking from an acclaimed actor and producer but now has strived to be an award winning director as well.
Georgina Lightning made her directorial debut with “Older Than America”. It’s a film about Indian boarding school systems, healing from the schools and what it did to them. Georgina has a long track record of creative experience and has worked on projects such as: Dreamkeepers, Backroads, Christmas In The Clouds and countless others. Georgina has guest starred in T.V. episodes of Walker Texas Ranger and the West Wing.

When asked what advice she would give aspiring writers and filmmakers, Georgina replies, “There is no limit! You can accomplish anything you want to. Just be true artists and know that you own that right to be one. I have a Sundance ceremony in my film that people are upset about because it’s going to be controversial but I don’t think it is because I am Native American. I’m a Cree girl and we have Sundances on our Rez.  It’s about healing from boarding schools and what it did to us, thinking outside of the box and moving forward and progressing. I am an artist and I’m painting a picture without a brush or canvas. I am using film.”

The movie “Older Than America” is being presented on July 24th, 2009 at the North Bay Capitol Centre. Special guest appearance by Georgina Lightning with opening remarks before the movie and with a VIP meet and greet after the show. General admission tickets are $10.00 for the show. For VIP tickets, please contact, the movie presenter, Bradly Dreamwalker MacDonald at 705-724-1211.

Older Than America is about a woman’s haunting visions revealing a Catholic priest’s sinister plot to silence her mother from speaking the truth about the atrocities that occurred at a First Nations boarding school. It is a contemporary drama of suspense and focuses on the lasting impact of the cultural genocide that occurred at such schools throughout the USA and Canada.

Ann MacDonald

Shear’s Elegance Beauty Salon (665 Oak Street. East. North Bay) is extremely happy to announce a new addition to the salon, the very talented Mrs. Ann MacDonald.

Ann was originally born and raised in North Bay. However, during 1994 to 1996, Ann spent these two years in Australia where she learned Reiki. She is now a Reiki Master and teacher. She actually came back from Australia to retire in Loring but shortly afterwards decided to move to Pointe au Baril.

Her move there was specifically to start a Bed & Breakfast Retreat and Spa. She operated her B&B for five years before making the move back to the area. The reason why she came back is a beautiful one: her and her husband, Bradly Dreamwalker MacDonald moved back in August 2008 to have their son, Joey.

Ann offers a variety of services to her clients, including a newer type of massage, which is not commonly practiced in this area, called Thai Hot Stem Massage.

This type of massage is performed through the use of a hot herbal stem that is made in Thailand. Because of the heat, the massage is a deep penetrating one and because of the herbs used, it is also a detoxifying massage.

In addition to this type of massage, Ann also offers aromatherapy massage and hot stone massage.

Other services she offers to her clients are Biosculpture Gel Nails, manicures and pedicures.

To experience one or more of the services that Ann can offer in a professional and relaxing environment, please feel free to call her at work (705) 474-6110 or at (705) 724-1211 to book your appointment.

Saturday appointments are available by appointment only.
