4. The La Peregrina (Pilgrim) pearl is several hundred years old and was owned by Mary Tudor and then by Spanish royalty. Ms. Taylor has owned it since 1969.

MARCH IS FOOT HEALTH MONTH

footprint

How to “Read” Your Footprints

When you take a step, your foot typically hits the ground heel first and rolls toward your toes, flattening the arch slightly. As you push off the ball of your foot, your arch springs back and does not touch the ground.

That’s how normal feet are supposed to work.

Unfortunately, many feet aren’t normal. If your foot rolls too much toward the inside, it’s called over-pronation. This leads to arch strain and pain on the inside of the knee.

If your foot rolls too much to the outside, that’s under-pronation, and you’re more susceptible to ankle sprains and stress fractures.

You can remedy foot pain by compensating for these tendencies, but first you need to determine which way your feet roll.
Try the watermark test:

Put your feet into a bucket of water, then make footprints on a piece of brown paper. What do your footprints tell you?

If your footprint looks like an oblong pancake with toes, you pronate excessively or have flat feet. Try molded-leather arch supports, such as Dr. Scholl’s, off the pharmacy shelf.

When shopping for athletic shoes, ask a sales clerk for styles with “control” features — soles designed to halt that rolling-in motion.

If arch supports or sports shoes don’t help, see a foot specialist about custom-molded orthotic shoe inserts.

If there’s little or no connection in your footprint between the front part of the foot and the heel, you under-pronate or have a high arch. This means a lot of your weight is landing on the outside edge of your foot.

Ask for “stability” athletic shoes, which are built with extra cushioning to remedy this problem. And if you are prone to ankle sprains, wear high-top athletic shoes that cover the foot and ankle snugly to minimize damage from twists.

Pocahontas

pocahontas

Pocahontas was most likely born in Wicomico, Gloucester County, Virginia around the year 1595. Her true name was Matoaka. Pocahontas was one of many daughters of a powerful chief named Powhatan, who ruled more than 25 tribes.

Pocahontas first became acquainted with the English colonists who settled in the Chesapeake Bay area in 1607. Along with her tribe, Pocahontas watched the colonists build a fort and search for food.

The next year, Powhatan’s brother, Opechancanough captured colonist John Smith. Smith was brought to Powhatan, who decided he must die. According to an account written later by Smith, Pocahontas saved Smith’s life by throwing herself down and cradling his head before he was clubbed to death.

After promising to supply Powhatan with several guns, Smith was allowed to return to Jamestown. He did not deliver the guns but sent many other presents instead. Over the next year, Pocahontas and other tribal women visited the fort and brought food to the settlers. However, in 1609, Smith was forced to return to England after being badly burned in a gun powder accident. After his departure, relations deteriorated between the natives and settlers.

Several years later, Pocahontas was taken hostage by the colonists. She was treated kindly during her captivity and lived in the home of a minister. During this time, Pocahontas converted to Christianity and was baptized with the name Rebecca. While being held in Jamestown, Pocahontas met a distinguished colonist named John Rolfe. The two fell in love and planned to marry. Although the chief did not attend the wedding, he sent others in his place and a pearl necklace for his daughter.

In 1615, Rolfe and Pocahontas had their first and only child, Thomas. The following year, the family was invited to England, where Pocahontas became the center of attention of English society. Banquets and dances were given in her honor and her portrait was painted by famous artists. While in England, Pocahontas was also reunited with her friend John Smith, whom she had believed dead

Before returning to Virginia, Pocahontas contracted small pox. She died in England in March, 1617, at the age of 21. Pocahontas was buried in the chapel of the parish church in Gravesend, England.

Although her life was short, she is remembered for contributing to the maintenance of peace between the colonists and the natives. She remains an important part of American folk history to this day.

Female Facts

~In times of stress such as extreme hot spells, the female mushroom coral switches its sex so that most of the population becomes male. The advantage of doing so is that male corals can more readily cope with stress when resources are limited.

~Singing to females makes male birds’ brains happy.

~ Thanks to evolution, Whiptail Lizard males are nonexistent, but the whiptail lizard ladies have found a way around in vitro. A female will get a surge of testosterone, mimicking male behavior enough to trigger reproduction in another female, who can lay eggs and fertilize herself. How’s that for girl power?

Business Woman of the Month~ Sandra Maisano

Filed under: Business Woman of the Month

Sandra Maisano

Sandra Maisano is a creative artist. “I always had to be creating some form of art since I was very little. My passions are watercolor painting, sculpting in porcelain and presently creating jewelry from silverware.

I live in beautiful North Bay where I have raised three children (all grown and on their own) I have been married 26 years to a wonderful man (He hunts for some of my silver!) and he is very supportive.

I became interested in silver when a friend asked me to take a class with her. I learned how to make a ring and I got hooked right away. I’ve never enjoyed something so much. Rings led to bracelets, then pendants, then wind chimes. I’m always coming up with new ideas.

I don’t use heat (I don’t want to burn down my house) and only the best silverware is selected.

My husbands garage is now my favorite work place and he has been kind enough to alter his vice with Neoprene, a protective tough plastic. This prevents nicks and dents in the soft silver.

Besides jewelry, my imagination has led me to create many other products such as wind chimes, dog tags, key chains and key holders.

If you have any old or forgotten silverware lying around be sure to give me a call.

Custom Orders:
Would you like to have your relatives silver made into jewelry? I believe that you should be wearing a reminder of your loved ones. Better to have a pendant or a ring on you all of the time instead of in your drawer.
When you wear your silver daily it seldom tarnishes. So if you have silver, enjoy it.

Jewelry Making Classes:
Classes are available upon request and are kept small to insure plenty of one on one teachings. Two hour sessions are just $30.00.

Thank you for helping me recycle flatware and preserve the art of silversmiths. May you always be aware of the energy around and within you.”
