Heather Cote

An accessories business was never on Heather Cote’s list of things to do…But never the less on September 18th, 2006 Azure Accessories was formed.

Presently, Azure Accessories is a home-based business with online access. (www.azure-islands.com and www.azureislands.etsy.com) Phone: 1-705-493-0613.

Azure Accessories is the proud home of custom designed jewelry by Azure Islands, magnetic products, stainless steel products and purses from Nepal, Thailand and China.

The jewelry-making started as a way to keep busy when she wasn’t able to be physically active but soon became a full blown “addiction”…her fellow beaders will understand!

She designs and makes each piece with attention to detail, using the best products available which includes but isn’t limited to, sterling silver, Bali silver, silver plated, vermeil, Swarovski crystals, resin beads, semi-precious stones, freshwater pearls, lampwork beads, glass beads and stainless steel. Due to the cost of the material, Heather will work with gold as a custom order only.

In October of 2006, she saw an advertisement in the Nugget regarding the Christmas Craft Shows around town and made a few call. Unfortunately, the first craft show to call back was completely full but less than 24 hrs before the show was to commence, the organizer called Heather back informing her of a cancellation spot. The Commerce Court Craft Show, a great Craft Show, was the first Heather and her daughter, Dawn attended. The fabulous duo have been attending shows and markets ever since!!

Without Dawn, Heather would not have been able to attend most of the shows. Her help with driving, setting up, taking down and sales has been most invaluable.

Azure Islands Designs is about doing something Heather loves, simple as that!!! There is so much she wants to do and learn; from fabrication to making lampwork beads, to possibly opening a retail store.

Heather and Dawn would like to thank all their wonderful customers for their patronage, wishing everyone a happy and healthy New Year!

January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month

Cervical cancer starts in the cells of the cervix. The cervix is the narrow, lower part of the uterus (or womb). It is the passageway that connects the uterus to the vagina.
It is estimated that 1,350 new cases of cervical cancer will be diagnosed in Canada in 2007.

The lifetime probability of a woman developing cervical cancer in Canada is 1 in 147.

It is estimated that 390 deaths from cervical cancer will occur in Canada in 2007.

The lifetime probability of a woman dying from cervical cancer in Canada is 1 in 437.

Signs and symptoms of cervical cancer can also be caused by other health conditions so it is important to have them checked by a doctor.

Cervical cancer may not cause any signs or symptoms in its early stages. Early changes to the cells in the cervix are often picked up during routine Pap tests.
Signs and symptoms for cervical cancer are abnormal bleeding, spotting or bloodstained discharge from the vagina between periods, unusually long or heavy periods, bleeding after sexual intercourse, pain during sexual intercourse, watery discharge from the vagina, increased amount of discharge from the vagina and bleeding from the vagina after menopause.

Late signs and symptoms occur as the cancer grows larger or spreads to other parts of the body, including other organs. They are pain in the pelvic area or lower back that may go down the leg(s), foul-smelling discharge from the vagina, swelling (edema) of the legs, anemia, which causes tiredness and lack of energy and shortness of breath.

Treatment plans are designed to meet the unique needs of each person with cancer and the characteristics of the type of cancer they have. Treatment decisions for invasive cervical cancer are based on the size of the tumor, the stage of the cancer, personal factors, such as the woman’s age and if she wants to maintain her ability to have children in the future and a woman’s overall health

Surgery removes or repairs tissue that has been affected by cancer. Radiation therapy uses high-energy rays or particles to destroy cancer cells. Chemotherapy uses anti-cancer (cytotoxic) drugs to interfere with the ability of cancer cells to grow and spread.

IT’S TRUE
Generally, I am the most organized person. Ask anyone who knows me. My purse is orderly and has its place in my car. I can locate every piece of important paper in my house. My underwear go in the underwear drawer which is located next to my sock drawer and my desk is always tidy just like the rest of my house. So, after a quick stop to the grocery store for milk, I was dumbfounded when my keys were not in the supposed zipper pocket of my purse!

There I was, freezing my butt off in the darkened parking lot thinking, “This kind of thing isn’t supposed to happen to someone as prepared as myself.” I retraced my steps back to the store, down the hall to the dairy department but there were no keys to be found. I did however locate my frozen butt gorging itself on cottage cheese! I grabbed my butt, seriously wanting to kick it for getting me in this situation and made my way to the checkout I had been at. No luck there either.

Anyway, to make a long story short. Just a few weeks later, a package from the War Amps came in the mail with my precious keys tucked safely inside. Thank You War Amps and the kind individual who found my keys!!

The Defroster

Remember when you and your partner would go parking up on look-out hill. Just the thrill of not getting caught was enough to fog over the windows. Even if you were ‘just talking’ fog formed, making it difficult to convince the police otherwise.
Within seconds, the windows of the vehicle would be completely fogged over which was beneficial because no one could see you ‘necking’ when they tapped on the steamed over window.

Now day, it’s more than likely your dogs stinky, hot breath is causing this while it tries to stick its big head out a two inch window opening or the kids blowing on the side windows to draw simple pictures or writings that seemed to stay even after the fog has been cleared or your back-seat drivers persistent nagging. Either way, it’s not you having the fun… Any More!

Anyway, enough about me and my life. Here is some helpful advice from the boys at Jay’s Auto Centre on the all important car defroster.

The Defroster

Description: The defroster is a specialized mode of the heater, vent and air condition ‘HVAC’ system that directs treated air to the interior of the windshield and in many cases to the side windows.

Purpose: The defroster is usually used to heat and dry the interior surface of the windshield. This removes moisture from the inside to eliminate fogging and also warms the windshield to prevent water from freezing on the outside.

Maintenance Tips: An improperly operating defroster can impair your vision and your safety. Common defroster problems may include little or no airflow to the windshield, inability to change air temperature, and poor defogging. Many vehicles have an outside air / recirculation air control option. The defroster cannot properly remove moisture from the interior of the car unless it is set to the outside air mode. If basic checks do not reveal the cause of your car’s defroster problem, have it looked at by a professional service technician.

Modern Hairstyling & Esthetics School expands to serve more.

The Modern Hairstyling & Esthetics School has grown. After 53 years of diligently serving its North Bay customers, the school opened a new campus in Sudbury. The Modern College of Esthetics came to be in September 2007 at the Rainbow Centre in the heart of Sudbury, offering extensive Esthetics training.

Director, Lynn Dolbeck says “An employer of a large spa in Sudbury asked if we would open a school, as she really liked the training program we offered here. This really got us thinking.” Upon more research and having found the right location, they proceeded with their plans.

As a Private Career College, there is much paper work involved in opening a new campus. The challenges were interesting and helped make the new venture solid.” Never the less, just six short months later, they were open for business. “It was very exciting to open a new school from the bottom up with choosing everything from the location, décor style and equipment. It is an open concept school with a relaxing feel. My experiences in having the program in North Bay allowed me to use my wish list and make it a reality in Sudbury.”

Selecting the right person to manage the school was crucial for Lynn. “I moved one of my instructors, Valerie Domm to Sudbury to run the new school. Opening a new location allows us to reach more people and get them involved in our unique program.”

The lessons learned in opening the new school will be passed on to the students as some of them will go on to open their own spas in the future.

“It is always heartwarming to see the students when they reach their goal. Upon graduation, the majority of them are changed. Their self-confidence has grown and they are more in tuned with who they really are. It is great to have that opportunity to reach more people, not only for students but for clients who come in for relaxation and pampering.”
